An electronic health record and health information exchange have the potential to significantly improve the health status of Alaskans while at the same time reducing costs, improving safety, and supporting research. However, these benefits will only come with the commitment of key stakeholders.

*Hospital administrators need to set institutional policies in support of electronic records.
*Lawmakers need to enable appropriate sharing of information.
*Physicians need to seek information before acting.
*Insurers need to reward efficient practice.
*And consumers need to take personal responsibility for their own health.

The success of these groups depends on strong collaboration facilitated through an Alaska Health Information Exchange (HIE).
